Apart from turning a year older last Friday, there are a number of things on the go. That last update was referring to commencing a Masters by Research at the University of Canberra. I have decided to apply, so should my research proposal be accepted, and all the signs are positive so far, I will be having a major life change from July.

A story of mine was published by Auroa Wolf last November. I had forgotten all about the fact that this was also going to be included in a ‘best of’ publication by the same author. A contract turned up in the mail recently for it. Looking forward to seeing the final book. I shall post further details in my Words by Ross blog as they come to hand.

A whole new major project has appeared on the scene. I cannot say a lot about it just yet but the research involves exploring things around World War 1 and that is proving fascinating to put it mildly. Mind you, going through old documents like letters in fading, 95-year ink, is proving a headache (literally).

Yet more ‘we really like your work but can’t use it right now’ rejections. The thrill of having people like my work but not publishing it, has worn off somewhat. But it is still positive feedback.

Some more non-fiction work being published shortly and links shall be appearing on the website.

I have begun using Twitter a lot more (rossisawriter) including tweeting things like entries in my blog. Feel free to have a glance.

    Peace and out :-)

A fascinating time this evening, interviewing author Elizabeth Kostova at “Elizabeth Kostova in Conversation”, Gorman House Arts Centre in ’sunny’ Canberra (it was raining) - I have posted some pics in my gallery.

I have been running up a string of ‘we really like your work but it’s not quite right for us at this time’ rejections lately. It is nice to be told that someone likes my work, but I’d be happier if they published it.

I have just been to the most amazing two-day intensive comedy writing workshop with Tim Ferguson from the Doug Anthony All Stars (and heaps of other stuff). What a great bloke! And learned soooooo much. Also made it to the short list for an anthology that had over 5,000 submissions according to the editor, so that was something to have made it that far. Now time to go shopping that work off somewhere else.

Finished the year off with several pieces having made it to some final selection piles plus some further work of mine appearing in ACT Write. In the near future I hope to add to my non-fiction page with some actual clips.

My story, Homeward Run, is now up at Aurora Wolf and I love the way they have presented it.

Tomorrow is the start of NaNoWriMo - National Novel Writing Month. I’m all signed up to try and do my 50,000 words for the month - www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/536154

Plus - I have also signed up for Movember - men around the place grow a mustache to raise funds for medical research - I can be sponsored at au.movember.com/mospace/132145

I had forgotten that the October issue of ACT Write, the journal of the ACT Writers Centre, was to include a short piece by yours truly about short forms of poetry. So now I am not just a published poet (one published poem!) but am also an author on the subject! Now excuse me - I have to turn sideways to fit my swelled head through the doorway on my way for a coffee refill.

Some welcome news for a change - have just received word that a short story of mine is being published in the ezine Aurora Wolf and also included in their print anthology to be released in mid-2010. It has been a while between drinks. :-)

*sigh* another rejection - yet another near miss. Rather continue to sweat on trying to get that particular piece ‘right’, for now I shall concentrate on getting other material finished. Still have other pieces out with editors and have yet to hear back which is not necessarily a bad thing.

On a more positive note, yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of being the guest speaker at the August meeting of the Fellowship of Australian Writers, ACT branch. Here are links to my speaking notes and handout for anyone who may be interested.
